The future of last mile logistics

Last mile transport refers to the final stretch in which the goods are transported to the distribution areas or consumers, it is the last phase that closes the supply chain.

At present, the volume of electronic commerce derived from the pandemic and the impossibility of going to buy some products in a physical way has increased considerably. Faced with this situation, companies in the logistics sector have discovered the great opportunities that exist, as well as challenges, with last-mile logistics. Its main objective is to focus on optimizing services in order to meet market demands.

Robotization of deliveries

Pilot tests of robots equipped with artificial intelligence that are in charge of transporting packages and taking them to consumers are already being studied and put into practice, without the need to mobilize urban vehicles, which means a lower degree of pollution in cities.

To this day, tests are also being carried out with drones that fly over population centers and bring packages closer to homes. This trend has positive aspects such as the elimination of fleets that run through cities. The problem is that you have to make a very expensive investment.

Sustainable temperature controlled

Many companies in the sector are committed to the development of other transport methodologies at controlled temperatures, improving sustainability. It is a more complex type of transport since it has to be carried out preventing the cold chain of the products from being broken, for which reason special equipment is being created that is in charge of moderating the degrees and, in addition, guaranteeing that the cars are sustainable.

Both alternatives to the traditional last mile will be imposed on the market in the coming years and will serve to make a qualitative leap in this industry that does not stop growing.
